WEATHER IN ICELAND - CLIMATE IN ICELAND

It is the sad and unfortunate truth that many people believe that due to its name, the weather in Iceland is cold, dark, icy which is not worth visiting. However, this could not be further from the truth. The weather in Iceland, the 'land of ice and fire' is one of the best parts about this little island nation. The reason behind this misunderstanding is that the original founders of Iceland so enjoyed the climate and weather, that they sought to protect their little paradise and wanted to deter people from coming. So they played a trick on the world and named it Iceland and gave Greenland a much more enticing name, thereby keeping Iceland to themselves. Luckily, today we know that the names are actually changed and we do not get carried away by the tricks of the Vikings. Check the WEATHER FORECAST IN ICELAND.

Click for Reykjavik, Iceland Forecast

But then is it true that the climate in Iceland is not as cold as we imagine? Why? There is a simple answer to this question: the temperate Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream is formed off the coasts of Florida and the Yucatan Peninsula, where the currents of the the Atlantic Ocean meet those of the Gulf of Mexico. This current circles almost half the planet in a circle of 20,000 kilometers. Its strength is probably more than two million tons of coal burned in one minute. The difference in water temperature in the Gulf Stream and the rest of the ocean is about 7-9 degrees between Iceland and England. This current is the reason that the climate in Iceland is oceanic, that is, temperate.

With its northern position, Iceland has a much milder climate than we think, especially in winter. If the Gulf Stream changed its direction or cooled more than ten degrees, Iceland would become an uninhabitable island. But now we can compare Icelandic winters to winters in Germany and central Europe in general.

The average annual temperature of the capital, Reykjavík is 5 ° C, with the average temperature in January being about -0.5 ° C and in July 11-12 ° C. Weather in Iceland varies incredibly which has generated many popular sayings. For example the Icelanders will tell you on a rainy and cloudy morning: "So you don't like the weather in Iceland? Well, there is no need to worry, wait five minutes and it will change. In Iceland we don't have a certain climate, we have them all at once! "

As much as possible you have to be prepared. Only in one day you will be able to appreciate all the meteorological phenomena: sun, rain, snow and wind. Temperatures are not predictable, in summer you have to be prepared to go out with a winter jacket, but do not forget the shorts, since there could also be days of 25-28 degrees.

The climate in Iceland also offers beautiful phenomena such as the Northern Lights or the rainbows so big and beautiful, that they can only be enjoyed there. The Northern Lights (or Icelandic polar lights) can be seen from fall to early spring, as long as the sky is clear, dark, and temperatures are low. You just need a little luck to enjoy this magical phenomenon.

When it comes to the hours of the sun, you should not be so pessimistic either. It is true that during winter there are some days with very few hours a day when it is really sunny, but for example in mid-February at nine there is already light (full day) and the sun sets around five-thirty. In summer there are days without sunrise (days without nights). If we average light for each day throughout the year, we end up with almost 15 hours of light per day. What do you think? This average is much higher than most other places on our planet. Not too bad either, no ;-)

Although one may think that Iceland is a dark and cold country, the reality is very surprising. If we look at the average temperatures during the winter months we realize that it is much colder elsewhere in continental Europe than in Iceland. The temperatures during the summer seem low, but there are days of 25-30 degrees when you can enjoy glaciers in the shorts.

        REYKJAVÍK, THE CAPITAL OF ICELAND

reykjavik Islandia

What's Reykjavík like?

In a nutshell, the capital of Iceland is modern, dynamic, creative, open, welcoming and very special.

Reykjavík is not like other European capitals, here you will not find towering buildings, historical monuments or a classic center in the medieval style of central Europe. But Reykjavík offers much more than what you find at first sight. Reykjavík is unique city, full of life, very modern but also clean, safe and very close to nature. The low and extremely brightly colorfed houses in Reykjavík give the city a special charm. Some of these little houses, with their elf and flower decorations, remind us of our childhood fairy tales.

Losing yourself in this capital is almost impossible. Two points stand out above the rest: one of them is the Hallgrímskirkja church and the other, the Öskjuhlíð hill, with the spectacular Perlan building. Stop dreaming and come to Reykjavík, it will surprise you.

Reykjavík, a green city

In Reykjavík the air is so clean that, from Faxaflói Bay, you can see all the way to the mountains about 100 km away. In fact, on a day of good visibility, you can see up to the Snafellsness glacier, which is located about 3 hours away by car.

The city is surrounded by the sea on three sides and has many open spaces and green areas. There are parks, pedestrian areas, a lake in the very center of the city and a thermal beach, Nauthólsvik, about a 15-minute walk from the center.

Reykjavík citizens try to protect their city and maintain its fame as the cleanest and most attractive capital in the world. A city without smoke and without danger. So visitors are expected to do the same so that Reykjavík never ceases to be a very clean and welcoming city.

Reykjavík, a historical city

The history of the most Nordic capital in the world dates back to 874, when its first settler, Ingólfur Arnarson, arrived. It was he who built his farm there and gave the name to this magnificent site: Reykjavík, which means "smoke bay". The name reveals one of the main qualities of Reykjavík and helps us understand the reason why Ingólfur chose this site. Finding the hot springs and seeing the smoke rising from the ground, he knew that Reykjavík was where he wanted to make his home.

The 16th century changed Reykjavík's history, as the city became an important place of commerce. But it would not be until the year 1876 when Reykjavík was finally established as an independent city, although it only had 170 inhabitants. Since then there has been a significant growth in population and by  the beginning of the 20th century, it had some 6,000 citizens, which grew to 55,000 in 1950.

Today, 180,000 people, two out of three Icelanders, live in this city located in the south-west of the Faxaflói Gulf. This makes Reykjavík the most cosmopolitan city in Iceland, with many museums, galleries and cafes, which allowed it to be proclaimed in 2000, along with other European cities, as the European Capital of Culture.

The hot springs, which gave rise to the birth of Reykjavík, are today used by Icelanders to heat houses, apartment block stairs, swimming pools, parking lots and sidewalks.

Reykjavík, a city that never stops

Reykjavík is a city that never stops and always has something to offer. From big open-air concerts, to modern and original shops, excellent museums and small galleries with artists of all styles. Restaurants and nightclubs give a lot of atmosphere to the capital until late into the night and, especially during the weekends, the party does not stop until you want to.

Did you know...?

- Reykjavík only receives 4 hours of sunlight during the winter and in summer up to 20-22 hours a day.

- The average temperature in summer is below 12 ºC (although there may be days over 20 ºC), while in January it is -0.5 ºC.

- Reykjavík is the capital and the most populous city of Iceland but it only has 124,847 inhabitants (2018 data). If we count the entire region of the capital, the number reaches 222,484 (the population of Iceland as a whole is 348,450 inhabitants).

- The most common names are Jón (for men) and Gudrún (for women).

- The name "Reykjavík" is translated from Icelandic as "smoking bay".

- Although located in the southwest of Iceland, Reykjavík is the most Nordic capital in the world.

- The unemployment rate is one of the lowest in Europe.

- Major companies include video game developer CCP Games, airline Icelandair, radio station Ríkisútvarpið and biomedical engineering company Össur.

- Beer was banned until 1989 but since then it has been one of the favorite drinks of Icelanders and different craft beers can be found.

- Iceland has the oldest democratic parliament in the world. Its origins go back to 930.

- On June 17, 1944, the Republic of Iceland was founded, and a president elected by popular vote assumed the functions of the Danish monarch.

- In 1986 it hosted the summit between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, highlighting Reykjavik's new political status.

- In 1972, Reykjavik hosted the World Chess Championship between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky.

Information about the day trip to Landmannalaugar by bus

During this day tour, you will enjoy the geological wonders that await you in the interior of Iceland, such as the pearl of Icelandic nature, the red mountains of Landmannalaugar. We will pick you up at your Reykjavík hotel and take you to the beautiful Þjórsárdalur valley, where we will visit the Hjálparfoss waterfall. Hjálparfoss means "the waterfall of help". Next, we will proceed through the interior of Iceland towards Landmannalaugar.
Landmannalaugar is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful regions in all of Iceland. The rhyolite mountains create a fascinating world of extraordinary colors and hot springs where you can bathe in the middle of nature. In Landmannalaugar, we will take a 1-2 hour walk with a guide, then relax with a bath in the hot springs. On the way back, we will pass by the famous Hekla volcano, "The Entrance to Hell", which had the last eruption in 2000. Return to Reykjavík and transfer to your hotel in the capital.

DRIVING IN ICELAND

carreteras Islandia

On this page you will find all the information about Iceland's roads, one of the topics that most worries travelers who want to rent a car in Iceland. First of all, you should know that this concern is right, since booking a car in Iceland is not like in other places in Europe and it is advisable to be well informed of everything that awaits you upon arrival, before planning your trip. First of all, you have to keep in mind that not everything is as easy or difficult as it seems: for example, Highway number 1 (known as "Ring Road" and that goes around the island) is not like other roads (or highways) in the rest of Europe, and, on the other end, not all roads should be feared by novice drivers.

What should I know about the highways in Iceland?

In Iceland you can find the following types of highways:

a) National Highways

b) Primary Highways

c) Secondary Highways

d) F-Roads (highways in the mountains that head to the interior of the island which can only be accessed with vehicles with 4x4)

e) Local Highways (highways with local access only)

The most well maintained road and which is in the best state is of course, the well-known "Ring road", the Number 1 Road, which goes around the whole circumference of the island. As the numbers of the highway increases, the conditions of the roads get increasingly worse (for example: highway 22 is better than highway 225). F roads are the most difficult to cross and are only allowed for 4x4 off-road vehicles. Local access roads are usually private, do not have numbers (names only) and serve as access to private properties, fields, farms and some hotels.

What is Highway 1, the "Ring Road "like in Iceland?

Highway 1 (Hringvegur) is the main road in Iceland. It generally hugs the coastline as it goes a full 360 around the island. The only places in which it goes inland and away from the coast is by the western fjords and the Snæfellsnes peninsula. This road is completely paved (1,340 kilometers).

Highway number 1 is in very good condition and remains open throughout the year (unless there are some unforeseen conditions, volcanoes or glaciers). This road is usually a single lane in each direction, although it has areas with more lanes (Reykjavík - Hveragerdi area or Borgarnes area). In general, Highway number 1 is quite narrow, so you have to drive carefully. In addition, it has bridges which only allow one direction to pass at a time, where you have to be very careful. The maximum speed limit is 90 km / h.

How many highways in Iceland are paved with asphalt?

In addition to Highway number 1, the primary roads are also paved. These roads may be even more narrow but, on the other hand, they are less frequented and have much less traffic (except for the X road, which is the busiest road in all of Iceland). Some of the primary roads do not have the lanes marked, so you have to be more careful when passing because large vehicles may come in another direction. Of the total roads in Iceland, only 35% are paved roads.

Gravel Roads

These are the roads that we like the most and, fortunately, they are the majority. There are basically two types: primary and secondary roads. They are wide roads, with a fairly wide lane for each direction of traffic, but they are made of compacted gravel (so much so that it may seem like asphalt). These roads are very well defined with yellow landmarks or with stones at the edges. When belonging to the national road network, the speed limit is 80 km / h unless otherwise indicated on the road. In any case, caution and common sense must be used because there may be sections where it is not possible to drive at the maximum permitted speed, 80km / h, and the speed must be reduced.

Primary compact-gravel roads are intended to be kept open for as long as possible during the year, as they are a commercial transport route, but at some times during the winter they can remain closed. They are suitable for all types of vehicles, including passenger cars.

The secondary roads of compact-gravel are very narrow roads are not lacking in fun in the form of potholes, holes, puddles and fragments where ATTENTION!, the gravel may be loose or suddenly disappear. Sometimes these roads become dirt roads that can end up joining the F roads. However, normally, these roads are well defined to prevent you from going "off-road" (something that is totally prohibited even if you are driving a 4 × 4). In winter they are usually inaccessible. The maximum speed limit is 50 km / h and the use of a 4 × 4 vehicle is recommended to drive through them.

"F" Highways

These are the roads that you often read about in regards to driving in Iceland and which may sometimes put an element of fear into potential drivers. They are the mountain roads, all those that go into the interior of Iceland. That they are named "F" highways has a very simple explanation: they are not named as such because the road is more or less narrow (it can be gravel or dirt), or because of the condition of the road in regards to potholes, stones, mud, ash, or dunes, but rather because they have an unstable base. Roads F carry that categorization of F because it indicates that they cross a river at some point along the way and that very likely you will need to drive your vehicle through a river in order to be able to follow the road. Therefore, it is mandatory to drive with a 4 × 4 vehicle and access to any other type of vehicle is completely prohibited.

Consult the state of the roads and highways

It is important that once in Iceland you periodically check the state of the roads that you have scheduled on your trip in case you have to modify or divert the route due to the closure of the road or because it is inaccessible. To do this you can go to the government website of the Icelandic Highway Network, which updates its map daily with photographs and webcams of the main roads of the island, or to the Safe Travel Island website, which are responsible for to ensure the safety and rescue of tourists on the island.

Here are the links:

http://vegasja.vegagerdin.is/eng

What highway should I choose when driving to Landmannalaugar?

Three different routes lead to Landmannalaugar, only one of them does not have an F in front of the road number, which is highway 208 from the north. There is no obstacle on that route, but it does not mean that it does not require a slower driving (in the south of Landmannalaugar it becomes the F208 road). This means that if you are driving a small car you will have to take the same round trip route.

The problem is not really whether or not it is allowed to drive through these roads with a regular car. The letter F in front of the road number indicates that the road is too difficult for normal cars, they are often rough tracks, even with open rivers. In these conditions it is completely impossible to drive with a standard vehicle, and we definitely do not recommend it.

If you are not sure, call the helpline in Iceland 1777 * which you can only call from within Iceland and they will assist you in English.

If you want to call from abroad or your mobile does not let you dial 1777, call (+354) 522-1100.

When are the highways to the interior of Iceland open?

Most mountain roads remain closed until the end of June or later if the weather conditions are adverse. This is due to the thaw, the humidity and the inconsistency of the terrain, which make them impracticable. When they open to traffic, most are only suitable for off-road vehicles.

Recommendation: If you do not want to lose your temper or your time looking for the route inside and want to travel accompanied, choose one of our tours. The vehicles of these excursions will easily take you without difficulty through the most complicated roads of Iceland to reach the most interesting places in the interior. REYKJAVÍK
Welcome to Iceland! Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland, the small island nation in the North Atlantic, just on the outer rim of the Arctic Circle. It is a small city compared to most European cities, but there is so much to see and do in the city limits, even before exploring the rest of the gorgeous country. There is a wonderfully curated museum which gives you insight into what you can expect to see during the rest of your time in Iceland. We highly recommend it before you set off on your spectacular adventure. Plus, we've included the entrance to the panoramic terrace at the museum - the best view of the whole city.

From here you can gain your first experience with traditional Icelandic cuisine at the best restaurant in town, which offers an all-you-can-eat buffet, allowing visitors to try all of the local dishes. Or try our food and beer tour which is sure to get you excited about local cuisine and drink! Plus it gives a great chance to get out, meet a local and walk the charming streets and lanes of Reykjavík.

Staying a night or two in the city also gives you ample time to go visit the number one destination on all of Iceland, the fascinating baths of the Blue Lagoon  which will surely put you and your travel companions in the holiday spirit with some pampering and luxury before your ultimate Icelandic road-trip begins.

GOLDEN CIRCLE OF ICELAND
One of the first stops outside of Reykjavík should be a loop through the Golden Circle, one of the top trips made in Iceland. This Golden ring will take you past Thingvellir National Park (where you can see the division of the Eurasia and North American tectonic plates), then to see Geysir (the great-great-great- grandfather of all geysers and one of his namesakes Stokkur geyser who erupts faithfully every 5-8 minutes), and finally the Gullfoss 'Golden' Waterfall (utterly stunning and captivating).

SOUTHERN COAST OF ICELAND
The Southern Coast is another of the top tours made in Iceland by most visitors due to the fact that you see so much in such as short span of time and distance. You can start with the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, each one unique and each one equally beautiful and awe-inspiring. Next up are the  magnificent black sand beaches of Reynisfjara's which grants visitors amazing views of the basalt columns which sit where the earth meets the ocean, as well as the sea stacks which rise out of the ocean off the coast, creating an eerily beautiful feeling.

The charming coastal town of Vík, showcases a typical Icelandic village, with a beautiful church sitting above the city, from where visitors flock to gain scenes of the glittering ocean below. With any luck, you'll find puffins on the beaches just out of town.

VATNAJÖKULL ICECAP AND GLACIER
Rounding the southern coast, you'll encounter the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. The glacier is majestic and there are so many possible ways to explore, whether to an ice cave, a walk on the glacier, or by snowmobile. This is to your great advantage as with your extended time, you can choose from more than one option and experience the glacier in more than one way, and really feel its might and power.

One of the most popular excursions in this area is to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon (optional boat tour between icebergs according to season) which offers either a normal or a speedboat tour among the small icebergs which are dancing across the surface of the glacier lagoon. And when these miniature icebergs hit the black sand beaches, they cause the most dazzling spectacle, and give credence to the name, 'Diamond Beach' which is a 'must-see' as well.

SNAEFELLNESS PENINSULA

Snaefellnes Peninsula, while it is one of the top day trips from Reykjavík, the visitors only touch the main sites on the peninsula and don't do more than get on and off the bus. Here you can spend one, two or three days traversing the diverse area. The coastline is dramatic, with sheer cliffs at every turn. The old abandoned villages seemed to have been dropped from the sky. Mt. Kirkjufell offers the perfect background for any hike and gives Game of Thrones enthusiasts the chance to see filming locations and feel apart of the international hit show.

These are just SOME of the places you can see if you have anywhere from 1 week to 2 weeks or even better yet, 3 weeks in Iceland. The small island does not leave you lacking in activities and you'll wish you had even more time.

Choose the first date of your trip (typically your arrival date to Iceland) by selecting the trip, date and number of travelers found next to every tour calendar and click on the “Book” button. In the next step fill in your personal data, email, address and phone number and proceed to the payment. You can choose a full payment or a deposit payment.

Have you found a trip which suits you but you want to change the itinerary a little? Would you like to add or remove some days, or perhaps change (add/remove/switch) the different experiences which are included?

Don´t hesitate to contact our travel agency at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and you will receive an accordingly modified trip with a price, availability and a payment link for confirmation to your email the next business day at the latest.

What exactly will happen if I as a customer click on the "reservation button" - what are the next steps which will follow until my arrival to Iceland?

After a trip reservation you will receive an automatic confirmation to your email. Our reservation department will contact you by email and/or phone the following business day. We will create you recommended itinerary for your trip tailored accordingly to your expectations and budget. This itinerary is typically adjusted with the customer within 2 business days. After the final payment (5 weeks in advance of the starting date at the latest) you will receive official vouchers to all services you have chosen. These vouchers are clearly aligned with the itinerary so you can not confuse them. You will also receive direct contacts to our support during your trip. All these documents you receive at least a week in advance of the first day of your trip.

Are there any additional fees?

No, the entire price is what you see for the package you have chosen. If you wish to further tailor or edit your personalized itinerary, you can add extras or other experience according to your individual wishes (e.g. bigger car, extra insurance, whale watching, admission to the lagoons, northern lights tours, helicopter exploring flights, glacier hiking...)

What is expected from me as a customer?

The customer has to buy the flight tickets to/from Iceland (KEF - Keflavík international airport). You can ask us for recommendations. Then please send us your flight schedule and flight numbers to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and pay for the chosen services. That's all. The rest will be managed by us (your selection) according to the mutually agreed upon itinerary.

Why should I as a customer reserve a trip with ISLANDICA (viajesislandia.com)?

Our travel agency has been providing services in ICELAND since 1996; we prepare detailed customer tailored itinerary; we run continuous competitors check for the best price/value trips for our customers; we only work with approved and comfortable hotels/accommodation with scrumptious breakfasts - for our guests we request the best and quietest rooms; we have an excellent customer satisfaction rate at 96,7% as of 2019; and we have mandatory official Travel agency insurance.

Where are the meeting points - exact address, place at the airport... How can I get there??

Our trips typically start immediately at the Keflavík international airport either by meeting with our assistant who will be waiting for you in the Arrival Hall with your name written clearly on a sign (we check the flight schedule to be there on time) or you will take the transfer (taxi or bus) directly in front of the airport. In case of renting a motorhome you will be picked up directly at the airport by an assistant who will transport you to the pickup station (less than 5 minutes away). And in the case of a car rental you can either walk the 5 minutes to pick up your rental car or you can take the airport shuttle which passes every 15 minutes.  All of these necessary details will be included in your personalized itinerary. We ensure that you can not get lost.

Where and when does the trip end?

Our trips typically finish at the Keflavík international airport. If the end of the trip is at another place, we will add the available options to get you to Keflavík airport on time for your flight. We ensure that the itinerary is prepared keeping in mind your return flight.

How should I find the hotels/accommodation (tours departure) during my trip?

Each place in the itinerary is well described. We know that in Iceland it is sometimes difficult to find the exact place by the address only, therefore we use other indicators in the itineraries as well. (GPS coordinates, parking lots, crossings, distances etc.)

What is expected from me at the hotel/accommodation reception desk?

At the reception desks you are obliged to provide your ID card (or passport) together with a voucher from our travel agency. That's all. No additional payments are required. (full accommodation costs are covered incl. city taxes, VAT)

What will I see/enjoy in Iceland?

You have everything written in your detailed itinerary with options what to do and see in certain areas.

What shall I do if I have any issue or if I need assistance?

You can contact an ISLANDICA travel agency by the direct assistance line (email or phone).
