What should you bring?
No matter when you travel to Iceland, if you plan to approach volcanic terrain it is essential to be well prepared. The right gear makes your experience both safer and more enjoyable. Here’s what you should bring:

Sturdy hiking boots – to protect you from slipping, water, and cold.

Technical clothing – waterproof jacket, warm waterproof trousers (such as Gore-Tex), light gloves, and a hat.

Protective face mask – recommended against volcanic ash and gases.

Hiking essentials – sunglasses, camera, snacks, and plenty of water.
ICELAND VOLCANO ERUPTION 2025 - DETAILS

Current status: There is no active eruption at the moment in the Reykjanes Peninsula.
Most recent eruption: Began on 16 July 2025 at the Sundhnúkur crater row near Stóra-Skógfell and officially ended on 5 August 2025.
Safety risks: Even though the visible eruption has ceased, the area still poses dangers due to toxic gases, unstable terrain, and fresh lava fields.
Hazard map: A new hazard map has been issued by Icelandic authorities, highlighting restricted and high-risk zones.
Future eruptions: Magma accumulation beneath Svartsengi continues, meaning further volcanic activity is possible.
Travel impact: Flights, tours, and the Ring Road remain unaffected. Keflavík Airport operates normally.
Access: Some roads near the eruption site remain closed, and authorities may shut down access at short notice for safety. Always follow official guidance.

As indicated above, helicopter flight over the volcanic area is probably the most comfortable and the safest way of seeing the eruption. Also from the above you get a complete view of the happenings. This tour is very demanded and the demand is larger than the offer, so we recommend booking your seats as soon as you know your travel dates.
